Merritt L. “Pete” Garwood, 86 of Alexandria died Monday, October 21, 2019, at his residence after an extended illness.
Pete was born in Edgar Co., IL. on March 28, 1933, and was the son of James and Avice (Robertson) Garwood-Parcel. On August 18, 1956, he married Shirley A. (Waller) Garwood.
He served his country during the Korean War serving with the United States Army.
Pete was retired from Delco Remy after 27 years in Plant Security and had been a Barber in Alexandria for over 50 years.
He was a member of the Eagles Lodge Aries 1771, Frankton American Legion Post, Frankton Lodge #607 of the F&AM, Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Murat Shrine Temple of Central Indiana.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Shirley (Waller) Garwood, His daughters, Beth (Gary) Thornton and Rebecca (Pat) King; his sister, Evelyn (Robert) Utterback; his grandchildren, Matthew (Megan), Andrew, Stefani and Scott and great-grandchildren, Aileigh, Eve, and Nyah. Also surviving are his brothers-in-law, Larry (Becky) Waller and Jerry (Susan) Waller.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at 1:00 p.m. at Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S. Park Ave., Alexandria with Rev. Micheal Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Vinson Memorial Park Cemetery, Summitville with Military Rites by the United States Army and Elwood VFW Post 5782. Friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3229 Burnet Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229 or to Alexandria Fire Dept. Flowers Fund, 212 S. Harrison St., Alexandria, IN 46001 or in care of the funeral home.
