Alma Irene Elbert, 88, of Alexandria, passed away on April 7, 2026, after a brief illness.
Born on November 4, 1937, in Anderson, Indiana, Alma spent most of her life in Alexandria, where she created a home filled with love, warmth, and family. She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1956 and, later that same year on November 10, married John Elbert, Sr. Together, they built a life rooted in family and simple, meaningful moments. John preceded her in death on June 21, 2001. Alma was also a devoted member of the Catholic Church.
To know Alma was to know a woman with a special glow about her. She loved deeply-and she loved forever. Her family, large, extended, and deeply cherished, was truly her heart and soul. Whether through a drop-in visit, a chance meeting, or a simple phone call, Alma's face would light up with a beauty that reflected the joy she found in the people she loved.
She appreciated life's quieter blessings. Alma enjoyed reading books on the porch in the warmth of the sun, staying connected with family and friends on Facebook, getting out and about, and spending time at family gatherings. She lived simply but loved greatly-and that love left a lasting mark on everyone around her. She was one of those rare women whose presence made others feel at home, and she will be missed in countless ways.
Alma was a devoted homemaker whose caring and nurturing spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She found her greatest joy in her family.
She is survived by her beloved children, John (Gail) Elbert, Jr. of Muncie and Sue (Jerry) Miller of Alexandria; her treasured grandchildren, John (Penny) Garner, Rachelle (Kris Weaver) Surface, Katie (Trevor) Abshire, Natalie (Zach) Harrison, Jessica (Randy) Blanton, Brandon (Alondra) Chism, and Danielle Chism; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She also held a special place in her heart for Yvonne Smith her friend and cousin along with Sue Barth her friend and neighbor.
Alma dearly loved her two special dogs, Spice and Dolly, who preceded her in death. Spice was so loved that Alma became known as "Grandma Spice" to some of her grandchildren-a name that carries sweet memories and deep affection.
In addition to her husband, John Elbert, Sr., Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Leola Mack; her in-laws, Claude and Deana Elbert; her son, Marty Elbert; her daughter-in-law, JoLynn Elbert; her granddaughter, Carrie Sterling; and her great-great-granddaughter, Malia Garner.
Services have been entrusted to Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 South Park Avenue, Alexandria, Indiana.
A burial service celebrating Alma's life will take place on April 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Park View Cemetery in Alexandria, with Father Dennis Goth officiating.
Though Alma will be deeply missed, the love she gave so freely and the warmth she carried with her will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. Her memory will continue to shine through the family she adored and the many lives she touched.
Bud and Susan Whetsel, along with the entire staff of Whetsel Funeral Service, are honored to care for the Elbert family during this time.
