Charles W. McKinney, 74, of Marion, passed away peacefully at 11:58 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2026, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Charles was born on June 6, 1951, in Morristown, Tennessee, to Charles Cox and Vioma (Coffey) McKinney. After his mother's marriage to Floyd McKinney, Charles was lovingly adopted by Floyd, who raised him as his own.
A graduate of Marion High School's Class of 1969, Charles continued his education at Indiana Vocational Technical College, now known as Ivy Tech Community College, where he earned a degree in computer programming. He married the love of his life, Judy Neeley, on August 3, 1980, and together they built a life rooted in devotion and perseverance.
Charles spent many years working in computer programming, a career that allowed him to travel extensively until health challenges made that no longer possible. He later transitioned to a position in the tool department at Sears, where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 2009.
Proud to serve his country, Charles was a veteran of the United States Navy. His service earned him the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 10 in Marion and carried deep respect for fellow veterans.
Charles had a wide range of interests throughout his life, but his greatest joy was rescuing cats, a passion he embraced many times over with compassion and dedication. While not formally affiliated with a church, Charles lovingly described himself as a "Bapticostal," a reflection of his faith-filled spirit and personal beliefs.
He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Hutchinson and Doris Seabolt; his brother, Lloyd McKinney; his sister-in-law, Mary Carter; and several nieces and nephews, including his nephew, LaRue (Michelle) Haynes, who lovingly served as his caregiver.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy McKinney; his parents, Floyd and Vioma McKinney; and his biological father, Charles Cox.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Faith Apostolic Church, 902 W. 16th Street, Marion, Indiana. Immediately following visitation, a service to celebrate Charles's life will begin at 1:00 p.m., with Joseph Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
Though Charles may no longer be with us in body, his spirit, kindness, and the memories he shared will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Bud and Susan Whetsel, along with the entire staff, are honored to care for the McKinney family during this time.
