Karen L. (Fischer) Smith, age 80, of Alexandria, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital Carmel in Carmel, Indiana.

Karen was born on October 9, 1945, in Hartford City, Indiana to Kenneth and Betty McCoy. She married George Smith, and together they built a life and family in Alexandria.

Karen devoted 25 years of her life to being a homemaker, lovingly caring for her family. She and her husband, George, also owned and operated the Alexandria Office Supply Store and Radio Shack, where they became well known throughout the community. Following George's passing, Karen found love and companionship with John "Butch" Thompson. They shared 30 wonderful years together until his passing.

Karen was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. She found joy in the simple beauty of life and especially loved cardinals, hummingbirds, and butterflies. Above all else, Karen cherished her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, companion, and friend whose love and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Kelly Smith; her son, Kenny (Donna McDole) Smith; her grandchildren, Kevin Waymire, Rebecca (Allan Golday) Waymire, and Thomas McKibben; her great-grandchildren, John McKibben, Ayia Golday, and Freddie Golday; her nieces, Karla Woodruff Schmick and Sarah Woodruff; and her sisters, Judy (Jim) Woodruff and Sharon Seal.

She was preceded in death by parents, Kenneth and Betty McCoy; her husband, George Smith; her companion, John "Butch" Thompson; and her sister, Jackie Bond.

The family will receive visitors from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 South Park Avenue, Alexandria, Indiana. Immediately following the visitation, a service to celebrate Karen's life will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Bud Whetsel officiating. Burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Alexandria, where Karen will be laid to rest beside Butch.

Bud and Susan Whetsel, along with the entire Whetsel Funeral Service staff, are honored to care for the Smith family during this time.
