Ralph Ivan Bowyer

Ralph Ivan Bowyer, Markleville, passed away peacefully at home on September 24, 2026, surrounded by the family he spent a lifetime loving, spoiling, teasing, and taking care of, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Ralph was born on October 2, 1948, to Wilma (Swanson) Bowyer and Wayne Bowyer. He grew up on a dairy farm outside of Anderson, Indiana, before moving to Alexandria, Indiana, where he spent his younger years becoming a fine young man, working for Fuller Farms while also causing a little havoc by revving engines and racing the streets.

He graduated from Alexandria-Monroe High School in 1968 and later joined the United States Air Force in 1969. Ralph proudly served his country during the Vietnam era, and his military service remained a source of great pride throughout his life.

On October 26, 1968, Ralph married the love of his life, Ann (Calabria) Bowyer, who would spend the next almost 58 years putting up with all of his shenanigans. While "putting up with him" became a family joke, there was never any question about how much he loved her, spoiled her, and made sure she was taken care of until his very last days.

After leaving the Air Force, Ralph returned home to Indiana and worked for Guide Lamp until his retirement in 1999. Most importantly, though, his favorite job titles were Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, professional spoiler, 4-H supporter, chauffeur, hunting and fishing partner, and full-time supporter.

In his younger years, Ralph was involved with the Corvette Club, Fall Creek Bass Masters, Four Wheel Drive Club, and Markleville Lions Club. More recently, he was a proud member of American Legion Greenfield Post 119 and the Greenfield Honor Guard.

If you really wanted to find Ralph, your best bet was to check the bleachers at a grandchild's sporting event or livestock show, stroll through Mt. Summit State Park campground, or stop by the nearest ice cream shop, where he was probably buying the grandkids something their parents had already said no to. And if you couldn't see him, you could probably hear the whistle that everyone knew.

4-H and livestock were an especially important part of Ralph's life. What began as something he loved became something he passed down through generations. He showed up, helped wherever he could, encouraged everyone, and took enormous pride in watching his family carry on the passions that meant so much to him.

He had a remarkable way of making family bigger. You didn't need to share his last name or any blood at all - to belong to him. He became a father figure, grandfather figure, mentor, friend, and biggest cheerleader to more people than could ever fit into an obituary. Ralph could meet you once and somehow make you feel like he had known you forever. When he loved, he loved big, and you became one of his own whether you wanted to or not.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Ann; children, Mark (Lori) Bowyer, Craig (Tina) Bowyer, and Roxanna (Chris) Bova; grandchildren, Cody (Katie) Bowyer, Caitlyn (Luke) McGill, Cara (Clay) Schultz, Michaela Bova, Maggie (Logan) Elsbury, Dominic (Olivia Brackin) Bova, Jake (Christie) Johnson, and Lacey (Dee) Johnson-Cherry; great-grandchildren, Layla Bowyer, Caroline Bowyer, Abi Schultz, Willadean Elsbury, Oaklee Elsbury, Eliza Johnson, and June Johnson; his sister, Elizabeth Eden; many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins; and the many others Ralph adopted in his heart and loved as his own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilma and Wayne Bowyer; his siblings, Jerry Bowyer, Don Bowyer, and Linda Moore; his brother-in-law, Ronnie Eden; and his beloved pets, Jake and Harley. We can only imagine the reunion waiting for him, and we have a feeling Granny was already saving him a seat at the Euchre table.

Ralph leaves behind far more than a list of names. He leaves behind stories that will get funnier every time we tell them, traditions that will continue because "that's how Dad/Grandpa did it," generations who know how to hunt, fish, camp, show livestock, and play cards, and countless people who know what it feels like to have someone genuinely in their corner.

There will be empty seats at ball games and livestock shows. Camping trips, fishing days, and hunting trips will feel a little different. Ice cream may last a little longer without Grandpa around to make sure everyone gets some. And in a crowded space, we know there will be moments when all of us would give anything to hear that whistle one more time.

We love you, Ralph. Until we see you again.

Please join the family in celebrating the wonderful life Ralph lived. Visitation will be held at Craig's house, 6160 S. 50 W. Pendleton, IN 46064, on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services, with military rites, will be held at Craig's house on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Inurnment at Harlan Cemetery will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions may be made to Willadean's Fight Club, with checks made payable to Maggie Elsbury.
