Richard H Baker

October 4, 1949 — January 31, 2026

Richard H. "Dick" Baker, 76, Alexandria, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at Community Hospital Anderson following a brief illness.

Richard was born on October 4, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Dr. Howard and Anne (Springer) Baker. He married his college sweetheart, Betsy Johnson, on June 14, 1970, and together they shared more than five decades of love, partnership, and family. Betsy survives.

Dick was a 1967 graduate of Harriton High School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He pursued higher education at several institutions, having fun at Purdue University and Temple University before earning his bachelor's degree in accounting from Ball State University. He went on to earn his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation and built a respected career in accounting. Dick dedicated many years to the profession, most recently with Mahoney Heineman & Co., from which he retired in 2018.

Family meant everything to Dick. He was an avid reader. Dick found great joy in tending his vegetable garden each spring and summer and in raising chickens, fondly referring to them as his "girls." He delighted in sharing his harvest, generously gifting neighbors and friends with fresh produce and eggs. Known for his dry wit and sharp sense of humor, Dick had a quiet way of bringing smiles to those around him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betsy Baker of Alexandria; his sons, Jon (Amy) Baker of Yorktown and Brian (Adelle) Baker of Simpsonville, South Carolina; his cherished granddaughter, Hanna Baker; his siblings, Robin Bolling, Suzy Bolling, Lynn Hornick, Cindy Garrison, Dan Bolling, and Scott Bolling; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jerry and Vicki Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Howard and Anne Baker, and his infant daughter, Kristin Ann Baker.

In keeping with his wishes, Dick requested that no funeral services be held. Instead, he asked that those who remember him do so by working to make the world a kinder and better place.

Private cremation arrangements have been entrusted to Whetsel Funeral Service, 1503 S. Park Avenue, Alexandria, Indiana. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.

Bud and Susan Whetsel, along with the entire staff, are honored to care for the Baker family during this time.
