Ronald "Ron" Garner, 83, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, in Anderson, Indiana.
Ron was born on February 4, 1943, in Alexandria, Indiana, to Leroy and Leona Garner. A proud graduate of Alexandria-Monroe High School's Class of 1961, he continued his education at Anderson University, earning his bachelor's degree, and later obtained his master's degree from Ball State University.
Ron devoted the majority of his professional life to Alexandria High School, where he faithfully served as a teacher, coach, and athletic director. He was deeply respected for his steady leadership, strong character, and unwavering dedication to his students and athletes. Generations of young people were influenced by his guidance, encouragement, and example, both in the classroom and on the field.
He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968, including service during the Vietnam War. Ron carried that same spirit of commitment and service into every area of his life.
On April 12, 1964, Ron married the love of his life, Darlene (Golden) Garner. Together they built a strong and loving family and shared many devoted years of marriage. He was a proud and loving father to five children: Sabrina (Paul) Balesi, Diane Johnson, Randy (Mandi) Garner, Rachel (Kevin) Young, and Rusty (Katherine) Garner.
Ron's greatest joy was his family. He was a proud grandfather to 14 grandchildren: Mitchell (Michaela) Balesi, Hannah Balesi, Jordan Johnson, Michael Johnson, Eliah Garner, Tyler Garner, Brielle Garner, Kameron Young, Hallie Young, Kenzie Garner, Rylan Garner, Cooper Garner, Maddux Garner, and Bailey Garner; and one great-grandchild, Scottie Balesi. Nothing brought him more happiness than watching his grandchildren compete and succeed in their many activities.
Beyond his career and family life, Ron had a deep love for sports and the outdoors. An avid fisherman and lifelong sports enthusiast, he also enjoyed working for many years in the clubhouse at Yule Golf Course. A devoted Chicago Cubs fan, Ron was happiest casting a line, watching a ballgame, or cheering from the stands, especially when his grandchildren were playing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Leona Garner; and seven siblings: Floyd (Ethel) Garner, June (Deloris) Garner, Chuck (Dorthy) Garner, Loren (Christine) Garner, Vada (Jack) DiRuzza, Dorothy (Gene) Haulter, and Phyllis Pittenger. He is survived by his brother, Ralph (Opal) Garner; brother-in-law, Jerry Pittenger; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A service celebrating Ron's life will be held on February 13 at Christian Congregation Church, 11015 N 300 E, Alexandria, Indiana 46001.
